a special review

This is a review posted by "Richard and Suzib", on a Louisville, KY gourmet/food reviewing site open to public comment. We think it's a nice, refreshing look at The Irish Snug from a non-local perspective.

Subject: We Made It To Denver - You Should Be Here Too

It's beautiful here in Denver. We pulled on to I-65 at 5:01 PM Friday afternoon in Louisville heading West to see family in Denver. On Saturday afternoon, Christmas Eve, we were sitting in the Irish Snug on East Colfax Ave., in downtown, at what would be 2:45 PM Louisville time. And, during the night someplace in the never ending drive across Kansas Suzi pulled into a rest area for a 4 hour nap.

Having 'suffered' through road food and snacks we had packed for the trip it was nice to be in a cozy pub, NOT moving, and getting some food that could carry us over till we fixed our own family meal. They had four tv's going with four different games on. The friendly crowd in the pub were much like us, mostly from out of town coming home to see family and friends.

Sorry Robin, et.al., but we did not try out the beer or the Irish Whiskey they had lining the wall behind the bar. We did have some BREWED iced tea tho which was really nice to see offered in a pub. Eddy ordered the vegetable pasta with chicken breast added on, I got a shepherd's pie, and Suzi had the smoke Salmon appetizer. We also got a cheese bread for the table. YUMMY! the bread was just a good hoagie roll but the cheeses they put on it were excellent and they toasted it till their was some nice cripsy parts. Served with warmed homemade marinara sauce, that Suzi and I wonder if we should have also ordered the pasta dish.

My shepherd's pie was like I remember from my years in the Mother Country, REAL mash potatoes, spread over a thick mixture of beef, onion, carrots, celery, then placed in the oven/broiler to 'toast' the top edges of the potatoes. Served HOT, along with a nice mixed greens salad with a vinegarette dressing. It was quite good and filling, but not too much. That pub place down on 4th Street Live should take lessons. You don't use a MICROWAVE, and there is supposed be more filling than potatoes.

Edwards pasta was great too. I actually got to try some of the vegetables and they same marinara sauce was used. The roasted red and green bell peppers were a tasty addition to my pie. The chicken breast has been grilled done but not over cooked. Taking into account that teen males as a general rule will eat anything that doesn't bite them first, he did clean the plate. Eddy ordered extra garlic toast for which to get all the sauce from the bowl. I did not get a chance to do that as he was guarding against sharing that last bits.

Suzi's smoke salmon was excellent, and served with fresh horseradish, red onions, capers and cherry tomatoes. It came with toasted sourdough bread as the carrier for the thin sliced North Atlantic smoke Salmon. The salmon was plated as a open petal rose, not just laid on the plate.

For anyone coming to Denver for a day or two we would highly recommend that you drive down historic Colfax Avenue and take in a lunch or dinner here.

See you all in the New Year.
